- Sleep is very important in a newborn’s life. This is when calories are conserved and baby grows.
- A newborn may only wake up to eat.
- Back to sleep is the safest way for a baby to sleep.
- No pillows, blankets or toys should be in the crib when baby is sleeping.
- Mattress should be firm and fit the crib.
- Crib sheets should fit the mattress snugly.
- Avoid sleep positioning wedges.
- If using a blanket, make sure blanket is tucked securely under the mattress.
- Blanket should not come higher than baby’s chest and baby’s arm should remain on the outside of the blanket so the blanket cannot cover baby’s mouth and nose while asleep.
- Sleep sacks are a great alternative to blankets.
- Due to the new “Back to Sleep” campaign, flat heads are on the rise. But not to worry, this usually resolves by age 1 without the need for intervention.
- To reduce the risk of “flat head”, change your baby’s head position (from left-to-right and vice versa) while he/she is sleeping and allow for tummy-time while awake.
