Care of the Umbilical Cord
Last Updated ( Monday, 19 September 2011 13:23 )
- Keep the umbilical cord out of diaper to allow cord to dry and to prevent baby from urinating on cord.
- Cleaning the umbilical cord with alcohol and Q-tips approximately 4-5 times per day assists in the drying process. (This is optional. Some hospitals still use this practice and some have done away with it, and simply leave the area alone to dry on its own.)
- Monitor for signs of infection (i.e. foul odor, swelling, pus, or excessive bleeding).
