- Daily requirement of iron for 6-12 months is 11mg/day.
- Healthy full term infants are born with a supply of iron that lasts for 4 to 6 months. After 6 months of age, iron is provided through diet (primarily from iron-fortified infant cereal).
- Premature infants or those with anemia or other disorders may require iron supplementation which will be prescribed by your pediatrician.
- Give iron supplement with juice (vitamin c) to enhance absorption.
- Avoid giving iron supplement with milk/formula since calcium interferes with iron absorption.
