If you’re expecting your first child and you’re at the very start of your pregnancy then your first examination by a midwife can seem quite daunting. Many expectant mothers don’t really know what happens during the first visit or what to ask their midwife during the appointment. The common questions below will help you get the most out of your first visit to your midwife...

How much experience do you have?

As an expectant first time mum you will want to know that you’re in the hands of an experienced midwife who has worked with a number of women and dealt with a range of issues, such as high risk pregnancy, so you know that they can deal with any situation.

How many appointments will we have?

Be sure to ask your midwife how many appointments they will need you to attend and see how flexible they are with appointment times so you know how far in advance you need to book. You are likely to have some questions and concerns in between visits so ask how these will be dealt with and whether you can contact them if you need to.

Will you help me to create a birth plan?

If you have a specific idea in mind for the birth then this is great but many first time expectant mothers may not be aware of all the options available to them. It’s important to ask your midwife about the different birth plans and which type of birth is right for you.

How will you help manage the pain?

The pain of child birth is intense and you’re not alone in worrying about this. Don’t be afraid to discuss this openly with them as they will be able to discuss the pain relief options that will be available and the pros and cons of each.

It’s important that you feel comfortable with your midwife and fully prepared during pregnancy – use these questions as a starting point when you go for your first midwife examination so you can feel more confident.
